Minor spoilers here.Īt one point there is a story told by one of the unicorns that explains to the audience their grudge with the wyverns. There was one part near the end where the perspective suddenly changed to a character we had never met before- and the narration went from third to first person, which was a bit jarring, but despite that, I was still hooked all throughout the story, and I still finished it in a day. If I went too fast, I would miss a transition into a dream or a flashback or something by one of the characters.

I’m usually a very fast reader, but I had to slow down to really let the words sink in. The prose in general was pleasant to read. In any case I really enjoyed all of the descriptions. They were described as satyrs, but…blue? Smurf satyrs? Smurftyrs? They were just the right amount of menacing. I like exploring this fantasy world, and learning about the many creatures that live there. I found this first part of the trilogy very enjoyable. He encounters many dangers on the journey, including the very wyverns that have caused the unicorns so much grief over the years. Meanwhile a headstrong, rebellious unicorn colt, Jan, has been allowed on the pilgrimage that will mark his passage into adulthood.

However it has been fated that the Firebringer will come to the unicorns and lead them back to their home. The unicorns have been at a disadvantage, since their enemies have bony plates that can shatter horns, and the wyverns have the secret of fire.

Ever since the unicorns were chased out of their home by the snakelike wyverns four hundred years ago, the two sides have been at war, both struggling to maintain a hold on the sacred valley.
